A Ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway
Photography by John Horm
During four days in August, 2003 we drove the northern 150 or so miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia. The weather, to be generous, was terrible, rain and heavy fog during the day and thunderstorms at night. Still the weather cleared enough to get a few decent shots. We stayed at Rocky Knob Campground in the national park the first two nights and at Misty Mountain Campground the third night (we got tired running the generator and wanted some hookups).

The photos below record some of the scenery and sights along the way.
A few indications of the weather and why there are not more landscapes.
We were mostly above or in the clouds.
A farm in the valley far below seen through a momentary hole in the clouds
We did have one or two short breaks in the weather that allowed us to kick back a bit and get a few color shots.
One of the cats is not shown, he's not real sociable.
A small flock of wild turkeys. Kind of makes you think of Thanksgiving.
There were a lot of yellow flowers.
Almost ripe peaches growing near one of the lookouts, perhaps the remnants of an old orchard.
Not full of color but interesting. A heavily water covered spiderweb stood out in the fog.
A visit to Mabry Mill and the working blacksmith shop and pioneer cabin.
Available light and a long exposure gives an interesting effect.
At last we get to the mill.
A sluice? running through the woods.
The duck was quite cooperative and liked to pose.
